Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Koryo hand moxibustion therapy on constipation that elders have in community.

Method: This study was conducted with nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. Data collection and the intervention were done from July 24 through September 22, 2006. The subjects consisted of 47 elders recruited from two senior community centers located in U metropolitan city. Twenty two were assigned to experimental group and 25 to control group. Koryo hand moxibustion therapy was given to experimental group with three times a week for four weeks. Constipation Assessment Scale(CAS) developed by McMillan and Williams(1989) with 8 items was used. Data were analyzed with ¥ö©÷-test, t-test and repeated measures ANOVA, using SPSS/Win 12.0 program.

Results: The findings were as follows: Hypothesis 1 was supported that the number of bowel movements in a
week in experimental group was significantly higher than that in control group(F=100.40 p=.000). Hypothesis 2 was
supportedthat the scores of CAS in experimental group were significantly lower than those in control group(F=170.63,
p=.000).

Conclusion:Based on the study results, Koryo hand moxibustion therapy would be effective in constipation
relief for elders.
